It
was 1990 when I started to take an interest in art, before then I painted
paintings due to
my lack of understanding in paintings, the paintings of there very nature
where thick in
brush stokes and lacked individuality , the paintings where mainly painting
form copy’s from
grate artist’s that lived before, artist’s such as “Vincent
Van Gogh” and John Constable,
paintings like “The Sunflowers” by Vincent Van Gogh and “Hay
Wain”by John Constable, but It
all started when I was given a copy of “The Great Artists.”
I was so excited by this picture
that I decided to do a copy of the picture from the book, the picture
was of “The Hay Wain”
and yes It was done by John Constable. I spent two weak painting this
picture and so many
years after painting this it still hangs on the wall in the sitting room,
I never grow tried
off looking at it, and it reminds me of that very important two weeks
I spent paint and what I
learned form painting it. It was soon after that I started my career in
the wrong note by
enrolling in a the liberties in Dublin, I only lasted around six months.

Gates of Hell by Rodin
The following year I enrolled in Ballyfermont senior college to do a portfolio
course to help
me get in to third level college I spent six years in Ballyfermot college
doing different
course, it was time for me to enrolled in a third level college, the first
was D.I.T (The
Dublin, Institute of technology) but the interview wasn’t a success
there where tree men
doing the interview and one man taking notes, I have to say that this
would put me off. The
next college was The National College of Art and Design (N.C.A.D) this
is the college where
I ended in, in the first year we learned a number of different skills,
how to paint, how to
make sculptures and how to print. We were also introduced to the world
of art by the
exhibitions that we where brought out. At the end of the year we where
put in to the course
that we would like to be in, my first chose was Painting, the second was
sculpture and the
third was Ceramics, I ended up in Ceramics.
This course is where I wound learn the art of making cups , bowls , and
plates , but the one thing that I wanted to do is sculpture.
Getting my inspiration from sculptor’s like Rodin who made the “Gates
of Hell” which was
inspired by Dantie’s Inferno, a poet at in the 16th century. This
inspired me to do a
collection of heads in the similar style to Rodin, the heads like rodin’s
style would be
gestures, and would give the impression of eyes noise and month. To start
of this studies
would be self portraits. I then went on to do cloth because I could see
the beauty that
cloth presents its self, its was inspired form where I worked as a linen
porter in a hotel.
